Bekka just sent me the link to this news story from the Nelson Mandela Foundation site about a recent seminar that they held to discuss the digitization of archive material. Interestingly, the seminar seemed to focus on some really key progress areas, namely:

Along with the need for all archival institutions to digitise archival material and make finding aids available online, the forum discussed the issues of missing Rivonia Trial records, restricted access to the archival records of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), and the need for archival institutions in South Africa to come together to share information and resources as well as provide a shared platform from which to lobby government about classified documents.

Great to see that collaboration and access issues are being discussed, but it seems that the missing issue here is around copyright and ownership policies relating – as well as online access (rather than simple digitisation). Really looking forward to discussing this at next year’s seminars!
